Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is one type of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) that is used as a noninvasive cancer treatment. The IMRT linear accelerator can manipulate the radiation emitted to better fit the specific shape and size of the patient's tumor for more accurate treatments. At Premier Cancer Centers in Dallas, our board-certified radiation oncologist performs EBRT with intensity-modulated radiation therapy using the advance TomoTherapy H Series system. Using the integrated computed tomography (CT) scanner in the TomoTherapy system, the treatment can be customized to change the shape and intensity of the radiation beamlets based on the unique location and growth of the tumor.
The main advantage of radiation treatment with intensity-modulated radiation therapy is the ability of the system to manipulate the radiation beam so it conforms to the size and shape of the tumor. This shortens treatment time since the maximum radiation dose is applied to the tumor. This also minimizes damage and side effects to the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor for easier treatments.
